01

Tickets & booking

Everything to confirm before paying for an entrance.

Where should I buy a Machu Picchu entrance ticket?

The official online platform is TuBoleto from Peru’s Ministry of Culture. You can also ask our local team to help you compare availability and coordinate the entrance with your train and travel plan.

How far in advance should I reserve?

Reserve as soon as your travel date is fixed. Circuit 2 and the mountain routes can sell out well in advance, especially from June through August and around holidays.

What information is required to book?

Use the traveler’s full name, nationality, date of birth and passport or identity-document number exactly as they appear on the original document.

Can I change the date or traveler name later?

Tickets are personal and changes are highly restricted. Confirm the date, route, entry time and traveler details before payment. Exceptional changes depend on current Ministry of Culture rules.

Do children need their own ticket?

Yes. Every visitor needs an individual entrance associated with their identity document. Reduced rates may require proof of age or eligibility at the entrance.

02

Circuits & routes

Choose the view, walking effort and archaeological areas that matter to you.

Which circuit is best for a first visit?

Circuit 2 is usually the most complete first-visit choice because it combines a classic panoramic view with important urban and ceremonial sectors. Route availability should still guide the final decision.

What is the difference between Circuit 1, 2 and 3?

Circuit 1 prioritizes elevated landscapes, Circuit 2 balances the famous view with the main Inca city, and Circuit 3 focuses on lower royal and sacred areas with optional mountain extensions.

Does one ticket let me enter every circuit?

No. Your ticket is valid only for the route, date and entry time printed on it. Routes are one-way and visitors must follow the assigned path.

Which routes operate only in high season?

Intipunku Route 1C, Inca Bridge Route 1D, Great Cavern Route 3C and Huchuypicchu Route 3D are designated seasonal routes. Always confirm current operation before purchase.

Can I take the classic Machu Picchu photograph?

The angle depends on the route. Circuit 1 offers the highest panoramic perspectives, while Circuit 2 includes classic viewpoints followed by archaeological sectors.

03

Trains & transport

Coordinate every connection between Cusco, the train and the sanctuary.

How do I travel from Cusco to Machu Picchu?

Most travelers go by road from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, take the train to Aguas Calientes, and then use the shuttle bus to the sanctuary entrance. Some services combine the road and rail portions in one bimodal ticket.

How long does the journey take?

Cusco to Ollantaytambo is roughly 1½ hours by road, the train commonly takes about 1¾–2 hours, and the shuttle from Aguas Calientes takes around 25 minutes. Times vary with the service and conditions.

Can I visit Machu Picchu as a day trip from Cusco?

Yes, when train and entrance times connect correctly. It is a long day with an early departure. Staying overnight in Aguas Calientes offers more flexibility for an early entry.

How early should I arrive for the train?

Follow the check-in instruction from your train operator and arrive with a comfortable buffer. Verify the station carefully because departures may use Ollantaytambo, Wanchaq, Poroy or another transfer point depending on the service.

Can I walk from Aguas Calientes instead of taking the bus?

Yes. The pedestrian path is a steep uphill climb with many steps and often takes around 1½–2 hours. Plan enough time and energy before your timed entrance.

04

The day of your visit

What to expect at the gate and while following your route.

What documents must I carry?

Bring the original passport or identity document used for the reservation, plus your entrance and transport confirmations. The details must match.

How early should I reach the entrance?

Plan to be at the sanctuary before the time printed on your ticket. Official late-arrival tolerance can vary by season, but it should never be treated as extra planning time.

How long does a visit take?

It depends on the selected route. Shorter archaeological routes may take around two hours, while mountain and cavern routes can require several additional hours.

Is a guide required?

Rules may change by route and period. A licensed guide is strongly recommended for context, orientation and responsible movement through the one-way circuits.

Are there toilets inside Machu Picchu?

Use the facilities near the entrance before entering your route. Services are not available throughout the archaeological circuit, and re-entry is generally not part of a standard ticket.

05

Weather & preparation

Pack light and prepare for a humid mountain environment.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The drier season from roughly May to October often provides clearer walking conditions. November through April is greener and wetter. Machu Picchu is open year-round and mountain weather can change quickly.

What should I wear?

Wear breathable layers, a light rain shell, sun protection and comfortable shoes with soft rubber soles. Avoid heavy clothing because temperatures change as you walk.

How large can my backpack be?

The official maximum inside the sanctuary is 40 × 35 × 20 cm. Train operators also apply luggage limits, so leave larger luggage at your hotel whenever possible.

Will altitude be a problem?

Machu Picchu is approximately 2,445 meters above sea level, lower than Cusco. Many travelers feel better there, but it is still wise to acclimatize, hydrate and walk at a comfortable pace.

Is Machu Picchu accessible for travelers with limited mobility?

The site contains uneven stone, steep steps and narrow passages, so access is challenging. Contact a specialist before booking to identify the least demanding route and arrange appropriate assistance.

06

Rules & restrictions

Help protect the archaeological sanctuary and avoid problems at the gate.

What items are prohibited?

Food, alcohol, drones, tripods, selfie sticks, umbrellas, large bags, aerosols, hard-tipped walking poles and other restricted items cannot enter. Check the official rules shortly before travel.

Can I bring food and water?

Food is prohibited inside. Carry water responsibly in a securely closed reusable bottle and eat before or after the visit.

Can I use a tripod or drone?

No. Drones, tripods, stabilizing supports and camera extensions are prohibited without specific professional authorization.

Can I leave my route and return to a viewpoint?

No. Circuits operate in one direction to protect the site and manage visitor flow. Follow staff instructions and take photographs when you reach each permitted viewpoint.

What happens if visitor rules are ignored?

Authorities may remove a visitor from the sanctuary without a refund and may take further action when conduct threatens the monument, wildlife or other visitors.
